They Draw and Cook - Granny's Apple Pie

It is a not very well kept secret that when I am making pie I am thinking about my mum. My kids know it and it makes them worry that I am feeling sad. They come and sit next to me and peel the apples and tell me funny Granny stories and ask me to whisper to them the secret ingredient. They know of course because I have told them a thousand times… “You have to put a little bit of love into it, all your happy Granny memories, that makes the best pie”. Last week Hugo was scootering past the kitchen (who let’s their kids scooter in the house?!!) and called out… “Not enough love mum”…and he threw some in over his shoulder.
My mum never let us cook as kids (or scooter in the house!!) because she thought we made too much mess but when I left home she taught me how to make short crust pastry because apple pie was my favourite.
There are no measurements for this recipe because she never followed a recipe and that’s how I learnt. It’s all about smelling and tasting and feeling and knowing it’s just right!
