Halloween Watermelon

Peeling the watermelon was the easy part. After that, I just stared at the knife and the watermelon and diagrams of brains all over google...and then worried that Jonah (9) would know what it should look like, but he was at school so I couldn't consult him. Once I realised it didn't have to be anatomically correct, I  just doodled with a knife instead of a pen. Halloween fun!! (and on inspection...Jonah approved!)

Fritz! and all things South Australian.

This week Newstyle Media is on the hunt for a cover artist for their new South Australian lifestyle magazine to be distributed in Foodland stores. With 100,000 copies being printed who wouldn't want the gig!

Like all places, South Australia has it's favourite delicacies....some that may seem slightly weird to the rest of the world. I didn't grow up here but a lot of my close friends did and they all still eat Fritz and Sauce sandwiches - a childhood favourite for school kids in this part of the world. Where I grew up it was called Devon and I never ate it!

If you really are South Australian there's also Haigh's Chocolates, Kitchener Buns, Farmers Union Iced Coffee, Fruit Chocs and one cannot forget Pie Floaters. Pie Floaters are basically a meat pie floating around in pea soup. They are street food and can be brought day or night from the iconic pie cart. According to wikipedia a favourite late night snack of Anthony Bourdain, Joe Cocker and Billy Connolly. But me...I'm still yet to be convinced!

They Draw and Cook - Granny's Apple Pie

It is a not very well kept secret that when I am making pie I am thinking about my mum. My kids know it and it makes them worry that I am feeling sad. They come and sit next to me and peel the apples and tell me funny Granny stories and ask me to whisper to them the secret ingredient. They know of course because I have told them a thousand times… “You have to put a little bit of love into it, all your happy Granny memories, that makes the best pie”. Last week Hugo was scootering past the kitchen (who let’s their kids scooter in the house?!!) and called out… “Not enough love mum”…and he threw some in over his shoulder.
My mum never let us cook as kids (or scooter in the house!!) because she thought we made too much mess but when I left home she taught me how to make short crust pastry because apple pie was my favourite.
There are no measurements for this recipe because she never followed a recipe and that’s how I learnt. It’s all about smelling and tasting and feeling and knowing it’s just right!

Drawing with J & H...

Jonah (8) and Hugo (6) are not impressed about Life Drawing. They are slightly insulted and have told me they run a much better drawing class. This week they are teaching "How to draw Dinosaurs". Every time I look away from my drawing Hugo steals it and fixes it up for me! It is true, their class is fun!!

Life Drawing

It is true, we have moved to the big city and so I have to take all the opportunities the city has to offer. Starting with Life Drawing classes. I need to get back into practise. After over four years of managing other artists, for my sanity I have to have some "me" time. I haven't done a life drawing class for nearly twenty years, so I have picked a casual suburban class. I know immediately I have found a safe place. In a crowded room, there are easels everywhere, chatter and laughter. The class is filled with mostly eccentric oldies, somehow this makes me feel at home. One week the model and the artists are debating local politics. They tease each other and discuss everything from the birds in their gardens to some arty jazz club they like to go to. Despite their exuberant friendliness, I still feel like an idiot. I have no clue what I am doing. I haven't been to art school, I don't know the technique. In the break I call my friend Robyn who reminds me I am not an idiot. A true friend she always is!

They Draw and Cook - Lemon Tarts

We made these Christmas day. The boys love collecting the lemons off my friend Robyn's tree and dropping the curd into the little tartlet cases. We make them teeny tiny so we can drop them into our mouths. I love cooking. It's my happy place.

Recipe is now up at the fun and yummy website They Draw and Cook .
