Illustration Friday - Myth

Narcissus (mythology)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Narcissus or Narkissos (Greek: Νάρκισσος), possibly derived from  meaning "sleep, numbness," in Greek mythology was a hunter from the territory of Thespiae in Boeotia who was renowned for his beauty. He was the son of a river god named Cephissus and a nymph named Liriope. He was exceptionally proud, in that he disdained those who loved him. Nemesis saw this and attracted Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection in the water and fell in love with it, not realizing it was merely an image. Unable to leave the beauty of his reflection, Narcissus died. Narcissus is the origin of the term narcissism, a fixation with oneself.

NB....Beginning to get frustrated by the limitations of scanning. Never seems to scan exactly like the original. Beginning to think photographing work is a better idea. Any tips...anyone??

  2. Hi, Claire,
I really like this kind of art you're doing, I see it as "pure art" (in the sense of art unpolluted) I compare (sorry for it) with the art of man in a primitive state , so I talk about art uncontaminated (contaminated by fashions or styles, or ephemeral aesthetic, etc, etc, etc... see?)
I see this work as if you came back to your mind inside you to express the primary, which is elementally important, like a man with a piece of charcoal on the wall of a cave, (and I think this is not easy to do)
    I like this a lot!
    Congratulations! :)))))

  3. Lovely interpretation and I love where the state of reality & the reflection do co-exist so well here!
Thanks for your kind message too.

i've zigzagged around abit on your blog. and i end up here, at your most recent post. your narcissus character is fresh! and pleased to meet you, by the way.

on behalf of the scanning, what is it you miss exactly when you scan? i scan quite alot of stuff, and am generally happy with the results, so perhaps i can help?

  6. I love your interpretation of Narcissus! It's so very colorful and lively.
As for scanning, is it because the light of the scanner is picking up things you didn't want it to? Like the shine on some of the paper or the overlapping effect of the grass? If that is the case maybe you should try to take a photo of it instead. But then you'd have to try and get the lighting right.

Thank you for the comment, it made my day (it's my first for my blog *squee*!)

    1. Ooooo...I remember that buzz...Mit @ Creations at Mit was my first "comment-er" and made me feel like I'd made-it in blog-land! Re scanning.. definitely shiny paper causes the most problems. I think photographing is the way to go although lighting definitely causes problems.

  8. Oh, I do like this one! So simple and yet rich in texture and emotion. I do like to see a little emotion in art - so often it's missing entirely. Or maybe it's just me that's missing it?

I like the fact that I can look at this one for quite a while and it holds my attention.
